( I confess, I only read The Secret History in the hopes that the characters would die and when one of them did, I vocalized my happiness to the empty room.) I admit, it’s not easy for me to read about them, I basically hate read Donna Tartt’s The Secret History and Hana Yanagihira’s A Little Life because of their privileged characters and the “problems” they all faced, but I’ll play along. But, whatever, rich twenty somethings have problems, too. That’s a lot of privilege for a reader who just retired from 30 plus years of teaching middle school. Four twenty-somethings of modest means have a very rich friend, who can give them all a trip to Japan and a weekend in an old Heian mansion. However, while I did have a good time Nothing but Blackened Teeth, my issues with the book never really went away.įirst, I had several problems with the basic set up. Maybe this is just what you want in a horror genre novel.Īnd it’s quick enough to read in a single sitting. Creepy, suspenseful, scary, a little gross. Though it took me a while to warm up to it, Nothing but Blackened Teeth delivers to goods. I think I’ve heard this story before, but it sounds like a good time. Two of them have invited the rest to celebrate their wedding and to spend the night telling ghost stories. Five friends arrive at a decaying Heian era mansion in Japan.

Veronika coelho6/10/2023 The remainder of the novel follows her last week in Villete and her interactions with some of the other inmates. Not only does she find herself in this hospital, but she also finds that she has damaged her heart with her suicide attempt and will die within the week. Unfortunately for Veronika her attempt fails and she wakes in Villete, “the famous and much-feared lunatic asylum”. Her preference is by overdosing on sleeping pills, which she takes one day in her rented room in a convent. She decides, in quite an organised way, to end her life. She is not, however, happy with this life. Veronika is loved by her parents, she has a steady job as a librarian and has had a string of boyfriends. The novel is set in Ljubljana, Slovenia and the eponymous Veronkia is a beautiful young woman who seemingly should have the world at her feet. This is my second Paulo Coelho book after reading The Devil and Miss Prym a couple of years ago. Book # 90 Reviewer: Ms Oh Waily (first published January 2014)

Moving the Chains by Em Lyons Bouch6/10/2023 The author did a wonderful job throughout the book in mentioning that there is help out there. This is what I really feel we could all use more of these days. He had willingly taken on the responsibility that both the mother and father had lacked. I especially liked and admired Abby’s brother with his love, caring and closeness with his sister. This book brought out what many families go through. Abby’s father who took to drinking and lost interest in dealing with responsibility also, was of no help except near the end of the book. The make-up of Abby’s family especially the mother brought out the ignorance that many people share in not understanding mental health issues. Abby, along with the other characters in the book were as real as real could be. The main character Abby, dealt with panic, anxiety and depression. It was a great story with a surprisingly thoughtful and appropriate good ending.

Chrétien is in his early eighties, clean-shaven, with receding white hair. Steve continues AND WERE VERY PLEASED THAT IT BRINGS JEAN CHRÉTIEN BACK TO TVO. The cover features a profile picture of Chrétien sitting by a window. Above all, these stories illustrate Jean Chrétien's firm belief that we must never cease searching for common ground despite our differences. MY STORIES, MY TIMES, A picture of the book appears briefly on screen. Jean Chrétien's stories serve to remind us that there is more to unite than divide us as a country, and that we have institutions we can take enormous pride in and values we must strive to maintain and keep building upon. With a delightful randomness, he remembers events and personalities that shaped our nation in a multitude of ways, and offers his views on international current events, including Canada-China relations, Brexit, and interprovincial dealings. This collection of essays features his trademark candour and ever-sharp political acumen, with plenty of wit to accompany the wisdom. With a career that spanned decades and an active retirement after that, it should come as no surprise that Jean Chrétien's illuminating, perceptive and often humorous stories could not be contained in just one book. With anecdotes and reflections both serious and light-hearted, My Stories, My Times, Volume 2 is a unique window on our country from one of its greatest statesmen and patriots. Following on the heels of his bestselling collection of political reminiscences, former Canadian prime minister Jean Chrétien still has a few more stories to tell. October 2018 marks twenty-five years since Jean Chrétien took the helm as Prime Minister.

Gogol mertvye dushi6/8/2023 The book goes way back to 1842, before Russian serfs were emancipated in 1861. At once a wild phantasmagoria and a work of exacting realism, Dead Souls is a supremely living work of art that spills over with humor and passion and absurdity. Chichikov’s scheme soon encounters obstacles, but he is never without resource, and as he stumbles forward as best he can, Gogol paints a wonderfully comic picture of Russian life that also serves as a biting satire of a society as corrupt as it is cynical and silly. What can he have up his sleeve, the local landowners wonder, even as some rush to unload what isn’t of any use to them anyway, while others seek to negotiate the best deal possible, and others yet hold on to their dead for dear life, since if somebody wants what you have then no matter what don’t give it away. The first of the great Russian novels and one of the indisputable masterpieces of world literature, Dead Souls is the tale of Chichikov, an affably cunning con man who causes consternation in a small Russian town when he shows up out of nowhere proposing to buy title to serfs who, though dead as doornails, are still property on paper.
